What is Educational Therapy?
Educational therapy is highly individualized one on one instruction. Unlike tutoring which focuses solely on academic content, educational therapy focuses on the foundational skills people need to help them be successful in the classroom, at work, at home, and in social settings. It is designed to help people with specific learning and social differences utilize tools and develop strategies that work for them long-term. Educational therapy is all about building skills and boosting confidence!
Why Discover?
Would my child benefit from educational therapy?
These are indicators that your child might benefit from our services:
- ADHD, ASD, dyscalculia, dyslexia, dysgraphia, processing (auditory or visual) disorder, or other learning difference diagnosis
- Early ear infections, delay in learning language, and difficulty maintaining concentration, remembering, and/or paying attention
- Loss of self-esteem regarding school performance
- Resistance going to school or participating in normal childhood activities
- Lack of progress at school and questions about ability to learn or to benefit from school
- Extreme amount of time and parent support to get homework tasks done
- Struggles with homework and school assignments that increase as schoolwork becomes harder
- Discouragement and withdrawal
Would I benefit from Educational Therapy as an Adult?
Despite the word "educational", educational therapy is not just for students. At Discover we focus on your journey to learn about yourself and how to advocate for your needs. This can happen at any age! It's important not just at school, but also at home and at work. While we do not diagnose differences and disabilities such as ASD, ADHD, dyslexia, processing disorders, etc., we do administer a wide array of assessments that can help you discover why certain tasks and/or environments present a challenge for you. From there we're able to come up with goals and a plan to help you practice and implement real strategies that will work for you long term. If you're struggling to communicate with coworkers or family, having a hard time meeting deadlines, having difficulty keeping up with chores at home, or are unable to find the motivation to meet your goals, educational therapy could be right for you!
What Should I Expect?
PHASE 1: ASSESSMENT
Client participates in an educational and cognitive assessment administered by Discover Educational Therapy or a psycho-educational assessment administered by a neuropsychologist to get an in-depth understanding of their profile.
PHASE 2: GOAL SETTING + PLANNING
The Discover Educational Therapy team works together with the client's team (self, parents, other therapists, teachers, etc.) to make measurable and achievable goals for the student or adult based on assessment results. A plan is put in place to work toward achieving these goals using research-based programs and methods.
PHASE 3: SESSION WORK
Discover Educational Therapy works one-on-one with the client to help them learn and utilize strategies that boost their confidence and equip them to independently tackle the challenges that they face in the classroom, in the work place, at home, and in social settings due to their learning differences.
PHASE 4: CELEBRATION AND TERMINATION
Repeat steps 1-3 and celebrate as the client meets short-term goals. As the client grows in confidence and ability, they will become more and more independent and eventually meet their long-term goals. This means they no longer require us and are ready to terminate services! This is the goal for every client; however, each client is unique and will reach this phase at their own pace depending on a variety of factors such as cognitive ability, learning differences, motivation, social-emotional factors, and behavior. We are here for them as long as they need us, but will let them know when they are ready to take the next step in their journey without us.
